A happy young woman with a perfect smile.

When the gums recede, more of the tooth root is exposed. The wearing away or shrinkage of tissue around the margins of the gums increases the opportunity for gum disease. Small pockets can form as gaps between the gum and tooth develop. These pockets make it easy for harmful bacteria to accumulate and cause infection in the gums. Without general dentistry treatment, severe damage to the bone and gums can lead to serious problems, including tooth loss.

In the early stages, gum recession can be treated with professional cleaning. The teeth are scaled with special instruments. In this process, hardened tartar is removed. Next, the teeth are smoothed with planing instruments. This allows the gums to reattach to the slick surface of the tooth. In some cases, antibiotics may be necessary to halt infection and eliminate harmful bacteria.

When the gums have severe recession, surgery may be needed to treat the condition. Deep pockets and bone loss can be treated with alternative methods. Open flap scaling and root planing could be necessary. Bone loss may be treated with a procedure to regenerate bone, and the loss of gum tissue may require a soft tissue graft to replace missing gum tissue and restore gum health. Your dentist will make a determination regarding the most appropriate treatment for your receding gums.

Relief for Bleeding or Swollen Gums

Gingivitis symptoms include bleeding or swollen gums. These symptoms often appear in the early stages of gum disease. Treatment includes a thorough cleaning of the teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Antibiotics may be necessary to eliminate infection. Your dentist could recommend special toothpaste and mouthwash to help with healing. When addressed in its earliest stages, gum disease is easily treatable and serious complications can be prevented.

If your gums are showing symptoms of gum disease, make a call today, and schedule an appointment. Contact Mint Dental for treatment of receding gums and relief from sore, swollen or bleeding gums.
